Dr. Mehrine Shaikh is a board certified Ophthalmologist, specializing in cataract surgery and the medical treatment of patients with vitreo-retinal diseases including age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and other complex disorders of the retina. 

Dr. Shaikh graduated from Aga Khan University where she completed her medical training. She deepened her knowledge in complex retinal disorders while completing a clinical research fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institute in Boston where she was involved in the care of patients with complex ocular inflammatory diseases. Dr. Shaikh then went on to complete her residency in Ophthalmology at the George Washington University in Washington, DC where she served as chief resident in her final year. Her desire to further specialize, led her to complete a fellowship in Medical Retina at the prestigious Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard University, ranked among the top programs in the nation for Ophthalmic training. Her mission for preventing blindness led her to do several International medical mission trips, where she performed sight saving cataract surgeries to the underserved.   

Dr Shaikh is well published in peer-reviewed Scientific Journals and has been a part of a number of clinical trials in her career. She continues to attend scientific conferences to make sure she is abreast with current literature and with the rapidly evolving field of Ophthalmology. She holds membership in several professional societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialist (ASRS), and Virginia Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. 

At Fairfax Cataract and Retina, Dr Shaikh uses cutting edge technology to provide the best medical and surgical care to her patients, including laser cataract surgery, various retina laser procedures and retina injections.
